#83 Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe – Striking looks, improved dynamics

Each generation of the Mercedes-Benz M-Class has been better than the last. This is especially true of the second generation, which replaced the original model that soldiered on through eight years of subpar reliability and build quality. The latest, third-generation M-Class is a subtle evolution of the previous one, upping the ante with even more power and features. The third generation M-Class has been in production from 2011. The overall design of the SUV was catching up with age.

Mercedes-Benz has decided to freshen up design in order to make it a more worthy competitor to its equally capable rivals. The changes not only affected the overall design of the SUV, but have also resulted to it getting a new name. The M-Class will now be officially known as the GLE. This reflects the resent restructuring witnessed in Mercedes where all models will be named in according to the brands five core models A, B, C, E and S. In the case of the model designations for the SUVs, in a tribute to the legendary G-Class, all SUV models will in future have the first two letters ‘GL’ in their name.

The ‘G’ here denotes the car's lineage. The ‘L’ is a linking letter that makes the model designations easier to remember and easier to pronounce. It is followed by the third letter, which indicates the relationship to the relevant core model series. For the case of the GLE the ‘E’ indicates the SUV’s relationship to the mid-range E-Class segment. The other big news from the revamped M-Class range is the introduction of Mercedes-Benz’s first ever four door coupe SUV. The GLE Coupe is the new addition to the successful portfolio of Mercedes-Benz coupes. Alongside the classic, two-door C, E and S-Class models and the four-door CLS and CLA-Class coupes.

The coupe-like nature is also emphasized by the design of the rear end which was inspired by the S-Class Coupe.
Rear lights
The styling characteristics of the rear include the slim band of rear lights with their three-dimensional look, the wide chrome insert fitted above and the registration plate now incorporated into the rear bumper. The rear window is rounded off at the top to compete the coupe look. A discreet SUV reference is made by the chrome-plated underride guard in the front and rear, here with the integrated twin tailpipe trim elements of the exhaust system.
Infotainment and 4-MATIC controls
The GLE Coupe rides on standard 20-inch 10 spoke alloys. Optional 21- or 22-inch light-alloy wheels with mixed-size
