Style and performance are hallmarks of the Ferrari brand. When the company debuts a new generation of its volume-selling mid-engine V8 model, each attribute is expected to rise appreciably. In the case of the Ferrari 458 Italia, expectations have certainly been met.
As a replacement for the already inspiring F430, the Ferrari 458 tops its predecessor in every performance metric and in the process raises the bar for all exotic cars. However, the 458 Italia’s performance might not be to the taste hardcore driving enthusiast. To fill this gap in the 458 Italia’s range Ferrari has introduced a more powerful version called the Speciale.

Looks
The Ferrari 458 Speciale features improved aerodynamics compared to its less powerful sibling. This is because most of the body panels of the car were redesigned. However, none of the 458 Italia’s signature features such as the striking headlamps, curved profile and the signature rear lights are changed.
The thickness of the glass used has been reduced to cut weight, while the rear windscreen features a lighter transparent polycarbonate called Lexan. The 458 Speciale’s front bumper is redesigned to improve on down force. The bonnet now features two deep air outlets to channel away the air exiting the radiator. The air outlets to the side of the headlight assemblies now also include three louvers reminiscent of Ferraris of the past such as the 250 GTO and the legendary F40.
The rear features a redesigned spoiler with a full-width grille and twin exhausts. The Ferrari 458 Speciale grips the road via Michelin Pilot Sport Cup2 tyres. The tyres surround the forged 20-inch wheels, which are 12 kilograms lighter compared to standard 458 Italia rims.

Performance
The 458 Speciale features the most powerful naturally aspirated Ferrari 8-cylinder ever developed. The 4.5-litre V8 churns out 445 kW (597 hp) and 540 Nm of torque. The engine is paired to a dual-clutch 7-speed gearbox. The 458 Speciale’s F1 inspired gearbox has been tweaked to deliver a sportier feel during acceleration. 0 to 100 km/h takes 3.0 seconds while 0 to 200km/h takes 9.1 seconds.
The 458 Speciale achieves a top speed of 325 km/h. The sports car needs around 13.3 litres of petrol to cover 100 kilometres. Like the rest of the car, the Ferrari 458 Speciale's soundtrack is both seductive and uncompromising. The position of the tailpipes lends the V8 the full-bodied low frequency soundtrack typical of Ferrari's sportiest engines.
The front double wishbone and rear multilink suspension have been redesigned designed to cope with faster, sharper, more challenging changes of direction. To cope with the demands of the car's increased performance, all of the components in the Brembo braking system have been evolved. The brakes feature larger brake callipers and new discs. As a result the 458 Speciale requires shorter braking distances compared to the Italia.

Interior
The cockpit features a distinctly racing-inspired look. Lightweight exclusive technical materials, such as Alcantara and carbon-fibre, are used extensively. All materials are blended seamlessly with the superb craftsmanship and sophistication typical of all Ferrari interiors.
All controls are clustered around the driver and on the steering wheel. A carbon-fibre wing, which extends over the central console section, puts the F1 inspired gearbox controls at an ideal angle to the driver. There is also a comfortable leg rest cushion on the driver's side to boost comfort.
Both seats have carbon-fibre shells and boast excellent side bolstering thanks to an ergonomic design which also helps contain weight. The shoulder-rests are trimmed in Alcantara for improved grip while seated and the backrests are padded with a breathable fabric to guarantee excellent air circulation and comfort.

Verdict
The Ferrari 458 Speciale offers the full all-out performance we expect from the Italian automaker. The precise steering and the fantastic high-tech electronics work together to keep the car poised on the road while still making the driver feel fully engaged in the process.
The incredible acceleration and soundtrack from the V8 engine combined with the performance themed interior ensure the hardcore speed freak is kept smiling while on the road. Prices start at $227,325. Ferrari is currently working on the 458 Speciale Spider.
